Spider Gates Cemetery: Haunted or Overhyped? My Honest Opinion

Spider Gates Cemetery is one of the most talked about paranormal locations in New England.

Over the years, I have heard and read countless stories about shadow figures, strange voices, apparitions, and paranormal activity (most not good), connected to this small Quaker cemetery in Leicester, Massachusetts.

Naturally- I had to see it for myself…

The History of Spider Gates

Despite the name, Spider Gates Cemetery is actually the burial ground of the Worcester Friends Meeting, a Quaker cemetery established in the 1800’s.

The nickname “Spider Gates” comes from the unique wrought iron gate that once stood at the entrance to the cemetery. The intricate design resembled a spider web, even though it was originally designed to resemble the sun. Over time, the cemetery became know by that unique nickname.

Today the original gates are no longer present, but the legend remains.

The Stories and Legends

Like many historic cemeteries, Spider Gates has accumulated its fair share of paranormal folklore over the years.

Stories range from ghostly apparitions and phantom voices to claims of portals, dark entities, and demons. The cemetery has appeared on paranormal websites, YouTube channels, and countless social media posts, earning a reputation as one of the most haunted cemeteries in New England.

But…does it live up to all this hype?

My Experience

When I visited Spider Gates, I expected to feel an overwhelming sense of dread, evil…all the things that has been told over the years. Now I did visit during the day, but honestly with all the years I have been doing this, it does not matter if it is daytime or nighttime. Keeping this in mind…

I found something very different…

The cemetery and surrounding woodland was very peaceful! Beautiful! Quiet…

Rather than feeling intimidated or uneasy, I found myself appreciating the history, the atmosphere, and serenity of the location. We do have to keep in mind, the Quakers practice a very peaceful religion. While I always keep an open mind during an investigation, I personally did not experience the level of activity that many stories would have you believe exists there.

I am not saying that others have not had experiences. It simply means my experience was very different.

Haunted or Overhyped?

Like most haunted locations, Spider Gates appears to have a mixture of personalities and energies. During my investigation using the SB-7, I received responses that ranged from friendly to wildly inappropriate. While some of the communication seemed random, other responses were certainly interesting enough to make me pay attention.

Throughout my walk of the cemetery, I did feel the familiar static feeling and cobweb feeling while exploring this cemetery. There were many strong energy points that could possibly form an apparition if given the chance.

Would I say the cemetery is “terrifyingly haunted”? Absolutely not. I can place this cemetery in the overhyped category.

I know this may disappoint some paranormal enthusiasts, but I believe honesty is the most important quality an investigator must have. Many times you need to watch with a skeptical eye at many videos or written accounts. Are they trying to get a name for themselves? Could this possibly be fake? There are so many questions to ask. The best approach is to visit these locations with an open mind and draw your own conclusions. If I can give you one important piece of advice- DO NOT let what you have read or watched become your biased conclusion before you enter.
