The Haunted History of Gunntown Cemetery Naugatuck, Connecticut

Gunntown Cemetery in Naugatuck CT: Haunted History and Ghostly Legends

By Linda McEachern, Founder of Veil Walker Paranormal

Gunntown Cemetery is one of the most famously haunted cemeteries in Connecticut. Located in the historic town of Naugatuck, this quiet, wooded burial ground holds deep colonial roots, controversial Revolutionary War history, and ongoing reports of paranormal activity.

For anyone interested in Connecticut ghost tours, haunted cemeteries, or early American legends, Gunntown offers a rare combination of documented history and unexplained phenomena.

The Colonial Roots of the Gunn Family

The cemetery takes its name from the Gunn family, early settlers of the Naugatuck region. Their patriarch, Jasper Gunn, arrived in New England in 1635 and helped found the town of Milford, CT. By the 1700s, the family had expanded into the Naugatuck area and established what was known as Gunntown—an 800-acre parcel that included a sawmill, blacksmith shop, general store, and distillery.

The Gunns were not just entrepreneurs. They were also political figures—and Loyalists. During the American Revolution, their pro-British views put them at odds with local patriots. One infamous episode involved a man named Chauncey Judd, a patriot kidnapped by Loyalists and held in a Gunn family barn before being rescued.

Despite this, the family remained prominent and wealthy, burying generations of their kin on this land. That burial ground eventually became Gunntown Cemetery.

Faith, Land, and the Movement of Sacred Structures

In 1803, Jobamah Gunn helped establish a new Episcopal church near the cemetery. The structure was completed in 1806—but was dismantled and moved more than two miles in 1831 to become St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in central Naugatuck.

This act symbolizes how central faith and community were to the area’s settlers. Cemeteries in this period were not just places to bury the dead—they were physical reminders of Christian resurrection, judgment, and legacy. The layout and placement of gravestones reflected deeply held Puritan and Anglican beliefs about the afterlife.

Today, the spiritual energy of Gunntown Cemetery seems to echo those beliefs—alongside the lingering unrest of those who never truly left.
